“My firm belief in my religion and the teachings of my Father Tullah Khan [Late], have helped me a lot in my life. My father was a great source of inspiration for me. He was a man of principles who transferred the long held family tradition of the community service and social work to me.  Besides the birth of my children, the most auspicious moment of my life is when His Highness Prince Karim Agha Khan appointed me as a member of National Council for United Kingdom. Although, a failure in our life is a bitter experience to bear with, [...]

"I belong to an area [Chilas, GB] that is one of the most backward parts of Gilgit-Baltistan(GB), Pakistan. I started my educational journey from the Army Public School. After completing my intermediate, I came to Lahore to proceed with my higher education. I opted Aviation as my field of study, pursuing my bachelors at Superior University, Lahore. Initially, it was way too difficult for me to speak English and interact with people and teachers. I was not even able to speak Urdu properly in my class. I faced the feeling of inferiority complexity for some time, however, I held my ground [...]

(1/3) "Life was all amazing with a long hanging bag on my back, rubber shoes my feet and a catapult in my hand. Grazing hundred goats along with my uncles over the hilly mountains and pastures during the day and sitting next to my father at night and learning the basic calculations from him in the dim light of the lantern and sometimes in the hardly found candle light, were the most joyful and exciting activities of my childhood. Living in a joint family of three dozen people and beating everyone in the arithmetic questions in the dining room was [...]

Life is not a bed of roses, and challenges and hardships are an integral part of life. That is the motto by which Shagufta Mumtaz lives and with this belief she has worked hard to achieve all that she has earned. Born the eldest of six sisters to a couple from Hunza she has achieved a lot in a short time. After high school, she went on to Karachi University where she got her Masters in Economics and was easily considered one of the brightest of the batch. But she felt her calling lay elsewhere. She followed her passion for [...]

"My story, might not be that different from the story of any other hard working student in the mountainous region of Gilgit Baltistan. Due to the lack of proper education facilities and because of the financial and other constraints, we all have to overcome challenging situations in order to mold conditions in our favor. I started my journey from an Urdu medium government primary school in Jalalabad. The start of my journey was not that pleasant as I had to face many challenges and failures at the beginning, but I learnt something out of all those hurdles that I crossed [...]

"I am the only visually impaired girl from Gilgit-Baltistan who got admission and is studying a masters degree at Karachi University. We are five siblings; four sisters and a brother and except my youngest sister, the rest of us are visually impaired from birth. However, with the grace of Allah Almighty, all of us are studying at different education institutions of the country. My brother is studying at Al-Makhoom Special Education Centre, Islamabad, and my sisters are in Ida Rieu School for Deaf and Blind, Karachi.  When I was a kid, my dad had a job in Karachi and my [...]

"Life is a long journey, and I believe everyday is a new start and, there is something new to learn and to get inspired from. I have the degree of BSc Industrial Engineering from University of Punjab, Lahore. Moreover, I completed my MS in Project Management from Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), one of a leading technical university in the Europe and in the whole world as well.  To achieve my dream, which was, to get a professional job in Europe, to stand with these developed people and prove myself professionally is something that kept driving throughout my educational and [...]

"Life gives us many good moments where we feel like everything is perfect. I am sure that you have felt that many times too.  Hearing the news of my scholarship for higher studies in the USA  is one of the most auspicous moments of my life. I still remember that day. I was on my way back to home from the National Youth Camp and upon reaching home, my parents had had that priceless happiness, reflecting from their eyes, hearing that great news. Each time I think about that moment, it brings positive energy in me and encourages me to work [...]

"He [My Grandfather] was a driver of a passenger Willys jeep who drove every morning on the roads carved in the dry mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan. I, wholeheartedly, salute him that he had managed to educate his two older sons at a time when education was accessible to very few in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). One of them was my father; the first specialized Architect of the region, Architect Essa Khan (Late).  In making “me” what I am, embeds a series of consistent hard work and sacrifices of the generations came before me. Since my childhood, I was inspired by my elder generations. [...]

"Born in Nasirabad, a small village in the lower Hunza valley, I remember our lives being dictated not by a calendar or a clock but by the climate and seasons. I remember celebrating wheat harvest for we could regularly eat bread thenceforth. In the spring, I remember eating mulberries and dried apricots for lunch and dinner. I loved collecting mulberries: shaking the branches of a tree, picking up the fruit and gobbling down handfuls without noticing that half of what I ate was sand. Life was simple and serene, but also challenging.  I was lucky to have access to the local [...]

I experienced it when I graduated from Karakoram International University (KIU), Gilgit (Pakistan) and left my home in pursuit of higher education and employment. I didn’t choose BBA-Hons as my undergraduate degree; it came to me as an opportunity as I was unaware of the directions available for a student with [...]

I faced two such circumstances in my life. I came across the first when my father passed away in an accident while I was studying in Grade 9. The sudden death of my [...]

“Failure is the result of giving up hope. If you stick to hope you will have no failure.  My elder sister is my inspiration in the life. Born in Hundur, Yasin Valley, Ghizer, GB, I started my educational career from the Federal Government Boys School of my village. I got admitted in DG School, Gilgit and completed primary education from there. I did middle schooling from Army Public School (HS), Gilgit. I remained first position holder throughout primary and middle education. After completing middle school, I got admission in Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Gilgit and completed SSC. Again, I [...]

Like most of the people coming from a region with less opportunities and guidance, I had to struggle [...]

2/2"In 2008, I got enrolled in NUST, Islamabad. I received scholarships from the Aga Khan Education Services, Pakistan and the Hashu Foundation. While at NUST, I was given the opportunity to study in the U.S. at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. During my stay in the U.S, I gravitated towards work on renewable energy therefore, upon my return to Pakistan I decided to pursue a career in the this field. Luckily I found a short-term position for a solar project at a university. There is no doubt that, even today, working in the energy sector is still considered a [...]

Throughout my early life, my father, a kind and intelligent man, emphasized to me the importance of my education. He believed in educating women, and was a great supporter of education in general. As a child, I was admitted to the Aga Khan Jubilee School, Buber. Afterwards, I took admission at the [...]

My father, the only source of the family’s income had fallen sick that's why I did not continue my studies and started stitching clothes at home to contribute towards the family's income. I continued doing so until 2004, when I went to Karachi for a Beautician Course, which was sponsored [...]

My father influenced me to work hard and be honest with others. I worked very hard to reach the world's No.1 oil field company(Schlumberger) and survive in it as its best engineer for last 15 years. My [...]

“I struggled very hard to keep up with my studies. I was sixteen and was studying in 10th class, when I got married. The marriage at such a tender age came with huge domestic responsibilities, something that I was not prepared for. Devoid of the least understanding of motherhood, I became a mother of three children. Meanwhile, I was attending my college and later university during my late teenage. My studies were excessively disturbed. Having an immense passion for literature, I wanted to become a poet. However, my accountability towards the family affairs coupled with my studies made it quite tough [...]
